The United States is a federal republic of 50 states, each with its own constitution, governor, legislature and courts, sharing power with the federal government in Washington, D.C. The first 13 states were the former British colonies that declared independence in 1776 and ratified the Constitution between 1787 and 1790. Vermont became the 14th state in 1791. As the country expanded westward through the Louisiana Purchase, the annexation of Texas and land taken from Mexico in 1848, new territories were organised and admitted as states once their populations grew, following the process set out in the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Alaska and Hawaii were the last to join, both in 1959.
