Provinces are the main units of local government in the Philippines. Each has an elected governor and provincial board, and contains cities and municipalities. This quiz covers 81 provinces, which are grouped into larger administrative regions and the three island groups of Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao. The provinces trace back to the Spanish colonial era, when the islands were divided into provinces for administration and tax collection. Provincial governments were reorganised under American rule from 1901, and many provinces were split after independence in 1946 as the population grew. New provinces are still being created, such as when Maguindanao was divided into Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur in 2022.
