Austria is a federal republic made up of nine states (Bundesländer): Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Tyrol, Carinthia, Salzburg, Vorarlberg and Burgenland. Each state has its own parliament (Landtag) and governor. Most states grew out of the historic crown lands of the Habsburg monarchy, such as the duchies of Styria and Carinthia and the County of Tyrol. Salzburg, once ruled by its prince-archbishops, became part of Austria in 1816. After the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed in 1918, these lands formed the Republic of Austria. Burgenland joined from Hungary in 1921, and Vienna was separated from Lower Austria in 1922. The states were abolished during Nazi rule and re-established in 1945.
