Mainland Portugal is divided into 18 districts, and this quiz also includes the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. The districts were created in 1835 as part of a liberal administrative reform and were the main level of regional administration for well over a century, each headed by a civil governor. The 1976 constitution turned the Azores and Madeira into autonomous regions with their own governments and parliaments. On the mainland, the districts have lost most of their administrative role, especially since the civil governors were abolished in 2011, but they are still used as electoral constituencies and remain a familiar way of dividing up the country.
Current quiz contains 20 districts: Aveiro, Azores, Beja, Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Lisboa, Madeira, Portalegre, Porto, Santarém, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Viseu, Évora.
