Counties (fylker) are Norway's regional level of government, between the national government and the municipalities, and are responsible for upper secondary schools, regional roads, public transport and regional planning. The word fylke comes from Old Norse, but the modern system dates from 1662, when Denmark–Norway created administrative districts called amt; these were renamed fylker in 1919. This quiz shows the 19 counties that existed for most of the 20th century. Since then Norway has redrawn the map several times: the two Trøndelag counties merged in 2018, a 2020 reform cut the number to 11, and in 2024 several of the merged counties split again, leaving 15.
Current quiz contains 19 counties: Akershus, Aust-Agder, Buskerud, Finnmark, Hedmark, Hordaland, Møre og Romsdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Nordland, Oppland, Oslo, Rogaland, Sogn og Fjordane, Sør-Trøndelag, Telemark, Troms, Vest-Agder, Vestfold, Ãstfold.
