What are the Provinces of Indonesia?

Provinces are Indonesia's first level of government, each with an elected governor and legislature. This quiz shows the 34 provinces that existed until 2022. When Indonesia declared independence in 1945 it had just eight provinces, which were gradually split as the young country organised its vast territory. A new wave of provinces followed the reformasi period after 1998, when decentralisation gave regions more power: Banten, Gorontalo and the Bangka Belitung Islands were created in 2000, and North Kalimantan in 2012. In 2022 the Papua region was split into several new provinces, bringing the total to 38. Aceh, Yogyakarta and Jakarta have special status.

Current quiz contains 34 provinces: Aceh, Bali, Banten, Bengkulu, DKI Jakarta, Gorontalo, Jambi, Jawa Barat, Jawa Tengah, Jawa Timur, Kalimantan Barat, Kalimantan Selatan, Kalimantan Tengah, Kalimantan Timur, Kalimantan Utara, Kep. Bangka Belitung, Kep. Riau, Lampung, Maluku, Maluku Utara, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Papua, Papua Barat, Riau, Sulawesi Barat, Sulawesi Selatan, Sulawesi Tengah, Sulawesi Tenggara, Sulawesi Utara, Sumatera Barat, Sumatera Selatan, Sumatera Utara, Yogyakarta.
