What are the Counties of Croatia?

Croatia is divided into 20 counties (županije) plus the City of Zagreb, which has the status of both a city and a county. Each county has an elected assembly and a prefect, and handles regional matters such as schools, hospitals, roads and planning. The županija has a long history in Croatia, dating back to the medieval kingdom, and counties were used in Croatia-Slavonia under Austria-Hungary before being abolished in 1922 under the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. After Croatia became independent in 1991, a 1992 law re- established the counties, which began operating in 1993. Their boundaries were adjusted in 1997, and most county names come from their main towns or historical regions, such as Istria, Dalmatia and Slavonia.
