What are the Regions of Finland?

Regions (maakunnat) are Finland's main regional divisions. Each is run by a regional council made up of representatives from its municipalities, which handles regional planning and development. This quiz shows 21 regions, including Eastern Uusimaa, which merged with Uusimaa in 2011. Today mainland Finland has 18 regions, plus the autonomous Åland Islands. Many regions are based on Finland's historical provinces, such as Satakunta, Ostrobothnia and Karelia, and their current form dates from 1994. Since 2023, health and social services have been run by wellbeing services counties, which largely follow the regional boundaries.

Current quiz contains 19 regions: Central Finland, Central Ostrobothnia, Eastern Uusimaa, Finland Proper, Kainuu, Kymenlaakso, Lapland, North Karelia, North Savonia, Northern Ostrobothnia, Ostrobothnia, Pirkanmaa, Päijänne Tavastia, Satakunta, South Karelia, Southern Ostrobothnia, Southern Savonia, Tavastia Proper, Uusimaa.
