Each of the 50 US states has a capital city, the seat of its state government, where the state legislature meets and the governor has an office. Many state capitals were chosen because they were in the middle of the state or because rival cities could agree on them, not because they were the largest city. Albany, Sacramento, Springfield and Tallahassee are all smaller than their state's biggest city. Some capitals were planned specifically for the role, such as Indianapolis and Columbus, while others moved several times as states grew. Santa Fe, founded by the Spanish around 1610, is the oldest state capital, and Juneau, Alaska, cannot be reached by road from the rest of North America.
