What are the Provinces of Thailand?

Thailand is divided into 76 provinces (changwat) plus the capital, Bangkok, which is a special administrative area. Each province is headed by a governor appointed by the Ministry of Interior, while Bangkok elects its own governor. The modern provinces have their roots in the reforms of King Chulalongkorn in the 1890s, which grouped the old provinces and city-states into larger regions called monthon, run from Bangkok. The monthon were abolished in 1933, after the end of absolute monarchy, leaving the provinces as the main level of regional administration. New provinces have been created over time by splitting existing ones, most recently Bueng Kan, which was separated from Nong Khai in 2011 as the 76th province.
