What are the States and Union Territories of India?

India is a union of states, each with its own elected government, plus union territories that are governed partly or fully by the national government. Today there are 28 states and 8 union territories. After independence in 1947, the British provinces and hundreds of princely states were brought together. The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 then redrew the map largely along language lines. New states followed, including Gujarat and Maharashtra in 1960, Haryana in 1966, Goa in 1987, and Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand in 2000. This quiz uses an older map: Telangana was created from Andhra Pradesh in 2014, and in 2019 the state of Jammu and Kashmir became two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Current quiz contains 31 states and union territories: Andaman and Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, West Bengal.

Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Chandigarh were removed from the quiz as they are too small and it's complicated to select them on the map.
