The provinces in this quiz are Greece's former prefectures (nomoi), which were the country's main local government units for most of its modern history, together with the autonomous monastic state of Mount Athos. The prefectures were first created in 1833, soon after Greek independence, when the new kingdom was divided into ten nomoi. The number grew as Greece gained territory: the Ionian Islands in 1864, Thessaly in 1881, Macedonia, Epirus and Crete after the Balkan Wars of 1912–13, and the Dodecanese in 1947. In 2011 the Kallikratis reform abolished the prefectures and replaced them with 13 self-governing regions and 74 regional units, many of which still follow the old prefecture boundaries.
