France is divided into 18 regions: 13 in mainland Europe, including Corsica, and 5 overseas (Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion and Mayotte). Each region has an elected regional council and is responsible for economic development, transport and secondary schools. Regions were first set up in the 1950s for economic planning, and became local governments with elected councils after the decentralisation laws of 1982. In 2016, a reform merged the 22 mainland regions into 13 larger ones. This quiz uses the temporary names given to the merged regions at the time; several were later renamed, such as Grand Est, Hauts-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitanie.
Current quiz contains 18 regions: Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine, Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Bretagne, Centre, Corse, Guadeloupe, Guyane française, Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées, Martinique, Mayotte, Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie, Normandy, Pays de la Loire, Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur, Réunion, Île-de-France.
