What are the Regions of Ghana?

Regions are the top level of local government in Ghana, each headed by a regional minister appointed by the president. This quiz shows the 10 regions Ghana had until 2018. These regions grew out of the territories that made up the British Gold Coast colony: the Gold Coast itself, Ashanti, the Northern Territories and British Togoland. When Ghana became independent in 1957, these were turned into regions. They were later split: Brong-Ahafo was separated from Ashanti in 1959, and the Upper Region was divided into Upper East and Upper West in 1983. After referendums in 2018, four regions were split to bring the total to 16: Brong-Ahafo became Bono, Bono East and Ahafo; Savannah and North East were carved out of Northern; Oti was split from Volta; and Western North from Western.

Current quiz contains 10 regions: Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Central, Eastern, Greater Accra, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Volta, Western.
