Malaysia is a federation of 13 states and 3 federal territories (Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya). Each state has its own legislature and government, and nine of them have hereditary Malay rulers, who take turns serving as the country's king, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, for five-year terms. Malaysia was formed in 1963, when the Federation of Malaya, independent since 1957, joined with Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. Singapore left two years later, in 1965. Kuala Lumpur was separated from Selangor to become a federal territory in 1974, followed by Labuan in 1984 and Putrajaya, the government's administrative centre, in 2001.
