What are the Oblasts of Ukraine?

Ukraine is divided into 24 oblasts (regions), the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, and two cities with special status, Kyiv and Sevastopol. Each oblast is further divided into districts (raions) and communities (hromadas). Oblasts were introduced in Soviet Ukraine in 1932, replacing the earlier system of okruhas, and most of today's boundaries were set by the 1950s. Crimea was transferred from Soviet Russia to Soviet Ukraine in 1954. When Ukraine became independent in 1991, it kept this structure. In 2014 Russia occupied and illegally annexed Crimea and Sevastopol, but Ukraine and most of the international community still recognise them as part of Ukraine.
