This quiz covers the flags of 14 countries and territories in South America. Most were adopted during or after the wars of independence from Spain and Portugal in the early 19th century, and many still carry symbols from that era. The yellow, blue and red flags of Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador all come from the flag of Gran Colombia, designed by independence leader Francisco de Miranda. Argentina and Uruguay both show the Sun of May, a symbol of the 1810 May Revolution in Buenos Aires. Brazil's flag was adopted in 1889 when it became a republic and shows the night sky over Rio de Janeiro on 15 November 1889, with the motto Ordem e Progresso. Paraguay's flag has a different emblem on each side.
