What are the Districts of Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is divided into 18 districts, each with a District Council that advises the government on local matters such as public facilities, environmental improvements and community activities. The districts are grouped into three areas: Hong Kong Island (four districts), Kowloon (five) and the New Territories (nine), which include most of Hong Kong's outlying islands. The district system was introduced under British administration in 1982, when District Boards were set up to bring local people into government. The current 18 districts took shape in 1994, when Yau Tsim and Mong Kok merged into Yau Tsim Mong. After the handover to China in 1997, the District Boards were renamed District Councils in 2000.
