Greece is divided into 13 regions (periféries), such as Attica, Central Macedonia and Crete. This quiz also includes Mount Athos, an autonomous community of Orthodox monasteries under Greek sovereignty. The regions were first created in 1987 as administrative districts of the national government, grouping together the country's prefectures. They became self-governing in 2011, when the Kallikratis reform gave them elected governors and councils and abolished the old prefectures. Most regions follow Greece's historic regions, such as Thessaly, Epirus and the Peloponnese, while island groups like the Ionian Islands, North Aegean and South Aegean form their own regions.
Current quiz contains 14 administrative regions: Athos, Attica, Central Greece, Central Macedonia, Crete, East Macedonia and Thrace, Epirus, Ionian Islands, North Aegean, Peloponnese, South Aegean, Thessaly, West Greece, West Macedonia.
