What are the Regions of Tanzania?

Regions (mikoa) are Tanzania's top level of local government, each led by a regional commissioner appointed by the president. This quiz shows 30 regions, including the five regions of the Zanzibar archipelago. Tanzania was formed in 1964 when Tanganyika and Zanzibar united, and its regions grew out of the provinces of the colonial era, which were reorganised into regions in the early 1960s. As the population grew, larger regions were split up: Manyara was created in 2002, and Geita, Katavi, Njombe and Simiyu in 2012. Songwe, separated from Mbeya in 2016, brought the total to 31.

Current quiz contains 30 regions: Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Geita, Iringa, Kagera, Katavi, Kigoma, Kilimanjaro, Lindi, Manyara, Mara, Mbeya, Morogoro, Mtwara, Mwanza, Njombe, Pemba North, Pemba South, Pwani, Rukwa, Ruvuma, Shinyanga, Simiyu, Singida, Tabora, Tanga, Zanzibar North, Zanzibar South and Central, Zanzibar West.
