What are the Provinces of the Dominican Republic?

The Dominican Republic is divided into 31 provinces plus the Distrito Nacional, which contains the capital, Santo Domingo. Each province has a governor appointed by the president and is divided into municipalities. The provinces date back to the country's first constitution, written in 1844 after independence from Haiti, which created five provinces: Santo Domingo, Santiago, Azua, La Vega and El Seibo. As the population grew, these were repeatedly split to form new provinces, many of them in the 20th century. The most recent major change came in 2001, when the province of Santo Domingo was separated from the Distrito Nacional.

Current quiz contains 32 provinces: Azua, Bahoruco, Barahona, Dajabón, Distrito Nacional, Duarte, El Seybo, Espaillat, Hato Mayor, Independencia, La Altagracia, La Estrelleta, La Romana, La Vega, María Trinidad Sánchez, Monseñor Nouel, Monte Cristi, Monte Plata, Pedernales, Peravia, Puerto Plata, Salcedo, Samaná, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, San Juan, San Pedro de Macorís, Santiago, Santiago Rodríguez, Santo Domingo, Sánchez Ramírez, Valverde.
